From Sketch to Structure

A user study on AI and structural design

Online About 20 minutes per scenario English Approved by the ETH Zurich Ethics Commission, 26 ETHICS-202

We are looking for participants to help evaluate how well current AI models translate hand-drawn structural design sketches into actual 3D modifications.

Anyone with a background in architecture, civil engineering, or a related field is welcome, students and professionals alike. No prior experience with 3D modelling software is required.

What you will do

You work through three design scenarios, each about 20 minutes. In each one you:

  1. Sketch a modification onto a 3D structural model.
  2. Build that same modification yourself in a browser-based 3D modelling tool.
  3. Describe the modification in your own words.
  4. Rate how well an AI model interpreted your sketch.
  5. Refine the result with the AI over a few rounds.

A short tutorial is provided at the start, so you do not need to prepare anything in advance. Your progress is saved as you go, so you can stop at any point and continue where you left off. Completing a single scenario is already a complete and useful contribution.
